MOUNTAIN

In Italy there is a split mountain

The complex of the Split Mountain of Gaeta (province of Latina) is set in the context of three cracks in the rock. It follows a staircase of 35 steps, which leads to the deep, suggestive central fissure, which, according to Christian tradition, would have been formed at the death of Christ. In the complex there are also a sanctuary and the cave of the Turk, whose hand would also be imprinted on the rock of the split Mountain. The extraordinary beauty of the place and the evocative atmosphere have made its fame international, so much so that it is a destination for continuous pilgrimages for the faithful.

The cave of the Turk
The route also includes a visit to the suggestive cave of the Turk. Today it is no longer possible to go down all the stairs that lead to it but you stop halfway, on a belvedere.

The hand of the Turk
Along the staircase that leads into the bowels of the mountain, along the narrow rock split, it is possible to see on the right wall a Latin couplet with the so-called "Hand of the Turk" next to it, the shape of a hand (the five fingers in the rock) which, according to legend, would have formed when an unbelieving Turkish sailor had leaned against the rock that miraculously became soft under his pressure.

The Split Mountain also has a belvedere over the sea, with breathtaking views. The complex can also be admired by sea, thus enjoying a perspective impossible to admire in any other way.

Myths, legends and history of the cave of the Turk
It cannot be excluded that in the cave of the Turk, during the Middle Ages, Saracen pirate ships landed and found refuge among the cracks of this strategic promontory.
