The House of the Vettii in Pompeii can be visited again after 20 years of restoration

After 20 years of restoration, the Casa dei Vettii in Pompei was finally reopened.

For visitors, and for the whole sector of world archeology, this is certainly excellent news since the House of Vettii is a building rich in frescoes and statues but above all it is one of those that over time have been best preserved.

The reopening of the House of Vettii was scheduled for the end of 2022 but was then moved due to adverse weather conditions. The reopening, among other things, is part of a multi-year process of full recovery of the archaeological site of Pompei.

Who were the owners of the House of Vettii
The house, among the richest and most famous in Pompei, is placed under the protection of the god of prosperity Priapo, painted to the right of the door, which also symbolizes the economic prosperity of the owners, the brothers Aulus Vettius Restitutuse and Aulus Vettius Conviva, freedmen, later became rich thanks to their commercial activity.

The restructuring of the Augustan age
In the Augustan age (I century BC), the house was renovated and changed appearance, distancing itself from the traditional scheme that for example characterizes other houses, such as that of the Faun and Sallustio. The tablium (i.e. a room generally located on one side of the atrium and in front of the entrance) is eliminated, to obtain more space for the garden, full of statues with water jets. It is precisely the garden that is the center of the house.

The restoration was carried out according to anti-seismic standards
The House of Vettii, before the restoration, was not accessible and was unsafe both in the internal and external spaces. Thanks to a team of experts composed of archaeologists, architects, engineers, geologists and gardening experts, the house has managed to recover its splendor and has also been adapted to anti-seismic regulations.

The fast restoration of 2016 to access the atrium
In 2016, thanks to a quick restoration, it was possible to open the atrium, so that tourists could access it at least. This choice was made to please tourists, who were disappointed because of the closure of the House of Vettii. From today, however, it will no longer be so since the house can be visited again.
